The BYD Qin is a series of compact and mid-size sedans produced by BYD Auto since 2012, named after China's Qin dynasty. It began as a plug-in hybrid version of the BYD Surui and was introduced to the Chinese market in August 2012. Over time, the Qin lineup expanded to include plug-in hybrid (PHEV), battery electric (BEV), and previously internal combustion engine (ICE) variants. The Qin succeeded the BYD F3DM, the world's first mass-produced PHEV, and featured improved hybrid technology with a smaller, more efficient lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery. The first-generation Qin combined a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine with electric motors to deliver strong performance, including a 0–100 km/h acceleration in under 5.9 seconds.
The second generation, launched as the Qin Pro in 2018 and updated to Qin Plus in 2021, introduced larger dimensions and advanced features such as BYD’s "Dragon Face" design, a large rotating touchscreen, and advanced driver assistance systems. The Qin Pro offered multiple powertrains, including ICE, PHEV, and BEV versions, with the PHEV variant producing up to 304 hp and a 0–100 km/h time of 5.9 seconds. In 2024, BYD released the larger Qin L DM-i, a mid-size sedan equipped with the latest fifth-generation DM-i 5.0 plug-in hybrid system, boasting fuel consumption as low as 2.9 L/100 km and a combined range exceeding 2,000 km. The Qin L features modern styling consistent with BYD’s Dynasty series, spacious interiors, and multiple variants offering electric ranges between 80 km and 120 km. A fully electric Qin L EV variant was introduced in 2025, further expanding the Qin family’s offerings. The Qin series remains one of BYD’s best-selling models, contributing significantly to the company’s new energy vehicle sales.
