Though spartan in its interior appointments, it provides a utilitarian and functional cabin ideal for tackling challenging landscapes. Generations
First generation (2010)

The first-generation Mahindra Thar, launched in 2010, was designed as a rugged, reliable, and affordable off-road SUV to succeed the Mahindra MM540 and fill the void left by the older model. Built on a sturdy platform with solid axles and leaf spring suspension at the rear, it emphasized durability and off-road capability, catering primarily to adventure enthusiasts and rural users. It featured a 2.5-liter turbocharged diesel engine initially producing 63 hp and 182 Nm torque, with later upgrades introducing a more powerful 2.5-liter CRDe common rail diesel engine delivering 105 hp and 247 Nm torque. The Thar came in 2WD and 4WD variants, with seating for six and a manual 5-speed gearbox. Despite its basic interiors and lack of modern comforts, it gained popularity for its strong off-road hardware, high ground clearance (around 200 mm), and classic Jeep-inspired design. A facelift in 2015 brought updated body panels, a factory-fitted soft top, and improved off-road features. The first-generation Thar remained in production until 2019, establishing itself as an iconic lifestyle SUV in India, especially valued for its ruggedness and affordability
