The MG7 is a mid-size sedan developed by MG Motor, with its origins rooted in British automotive heritage. The first-generation MG7, produced between 2007 and 2013, was based on the Rover 75 and MG ZT, adapting their design and engineering to suit Chinese manufacturing and market demands under the ownership of SAIC Motor. This version retained the premium cues of its British predecessors while offering localized features to appeal to Chinese consumers.

In 2022, the MG7 nameplate was revived with the launch of a second-generation model, marking a significant evolution in design and technology. The new MG7 blends modern styling, advanced infotainment, and performance-oriented options, aiming to compete in the contemporary mid-size sedan segment. With its return, the MG7 combines legacy branding with fresh appeal, reinforcing MG’s global ambitions and commitment to delivering stylish, tech-forward vehicles.

Generations

First generation (2007)

The first-generation MG7, launched in 2007, was a mid-size sedan developed by MG Motor under Chinese ownership, drawing heavily from the British-designed Rover 75 and MG ZT. It was offered in two variants: the MG7 Classic, with a focus on luxury and comfort, and the MG7 Sport, featuring a sportier design and firmer suspension. Retaining much of its British heritage, the MG7 was powered by a 2.5L KV6 petrol engine and came with both manual and automatic transmission options. Built primarily for the Chinese market, it blended traditional British styling with localized features, marking an important step in MG’s transition from British to Chinese manufacturing before ending production in 2013.

Second generation (2022)

The second-generation MG7, unveiled in 2022, marked a bold and modern reinvention of the nameplate, positioning itself as a sleek and performance-oriented mid-size fastback sedan. Departing from its traditional predecessor, the new MG7 features a sporty, coupe-like silhouette, aggressive styling elements, and a tech-rich interior aimed at younger, style-conscious buyers. It is powered by a range of turbocharged engines, including a 2.0L turbocharged petrol engine paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission, delivering strong performance to match its dynamic design. The cabin boasts advanced features like a curved dual-screen display, digital instrument cluster, and premium materials, emphasizing MG’s shift toward modern luxury and innovation. Exclusively developed under SAIC Motor, the 2022 MG7 blends bold aesthetics, cutting-edge technology, and engaging performance, signaling MG’s ambitions to compete globally in the premium sedan segment.
